Coordinated discovery
The research visibility challenge
Increasing research production is essential. But producing research is only part of the challenge. Research that already exists in African universities must also be visible, discoverable, connected and easier to use.
UniDiscovery is being built for that challenge.
Extend the discovery layer
Universities across Africa already hold valuable scholarship in institutional repositories: theses, dissertations, journal articles, conference papers, faculty publications, student research and other scholarly outputs. Yet these collections are often discovered only by people who already know where to look.
UniDiscovery
Wider discovery layer
Your university brings its scholarship into the discovery network. The network brings wider discovery to your scholarship.
What UniDiscovery does
Search beyond a single repository.
Give students, faculty and researchers a coordinated way to discover scholarly outputs from participating institutions and connected research sources.
Make institutional scholarship easier to find.
Increase the discoverability of theses, dissertations, faculty publications, student scholarship and other approved research outputs.
Connect research across institutions.
Participate in a growing environment where universities can make scholarship more discoverable across institutional and national boundaries.
Discovery without abandoning access rules.
Open resources can remain open while subscribed or restricted resources continue to follow the appropriate institutional, consortium and entitlement arrangements.
Give university research a wider digital presence.
Help researchers, departments and institutions gain greater opportunities to be discovered through a coordinated scholarly discovery environment.
A simpler discovery experience
A researcher should not need to know every university repository URL before discovering relevant African scholarship.
UniDiscovery is designed to bring participating university collections into a coordinated search experience while retaining clear institutional provenance.
Search once. Discover across institutions.
How participation works
Begin an institutional participation and onboarding conversation with the UniDiscovery team.
Work with the UniDiscovery team to connect eligible repository collections and approved research sources.
Your university remains the source and identity behind its scholarly outputs.
Approved metadata can participate in the wider UniDiscovery discovery environment.
Students, researchers and participating institutions gain new opportunities to discover your university's scholarship.
Who it is for
Strengthen institutional research visibility, collaboration and scholarly presence.
Extend repository discovery and provide users with a broader scholarly search experience.
Improve opportunities for institutional and researcher outputs to be found and used.
Connect existing institutional systems without requiring the university to surrender its platform identity.
Coordinate institutional participation, discovery and appropriately governed resource arrangements across member universities.
Regional collaboration
African university research should be discoverable beyond individual campuses and national boundaries. UniDiscovery is designed to support institutional and consortium collaboration while preserving the identity, governance and contribution of participating universities.
UniDiscovery is currently being piloted in cooperation with the Consortium of Uganda University Libraries (CUUL) as part of the development of a stronger shared research discovery environment.
We welcome conversations with universities and library consortia in Rwanda, Kenya and other countries interested in institutional research visibility and collaborative discovery.
Regional opportunity — not a claim of current membership
A broader platform
UniDiscovery is being developed as a broader university research discovery, visibility and resource-governance platform.
Repositories, catalogues and university scholarly collections.
Approved open-access and research discovery sources.
Institutional, consortium and subscription resources where access is supported by the appropriate authority and entitlement.
Discovery can be shared. Access remains governed.
Institutional value
Your research already exists.
Let's make it easier to discover.
Institutional demonstrations & partnerships
We welcome demonstrations and partnership conversations with university leadership, libraries, research directorates, ICT teams and library consortia.
